The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Review

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the epic tale of the death of one of the world's most prolific outlaws. It is told by the point of view of his assassin, Bob Ford (Casey Affleck, who was nominated for BSA that year). This movie is one of greatest westerns ever made, and one of the most underrated at that. Brad Pitt's portrayal of the outlaw is met with staggering emotion and brutality. Towards the end of his life, James began to descend into the darkness of loneliness and the reality of that his death is near and at hand. This movie has a terrific cast, wonderful cinematography, and realistic dialogue. It is full of little messages that you only notice after multiple viewings, such as when James cuts the heads off of two snakes, it symbolizes that the two that will "strike at his heel" will also be killed. After Bob Ford and his brother (Sam Rockwell) kill Jesse, their lives are ruined by Bob's brother becoming an alcoholic and eventually killing himself, and Bob being hated by essentially everyone he meets and also being killed. This movie is a terrific spectacle met with surprising beauty and a wonderful background and score. I give it a 4/5.
