In the Name of the Father Review

In the Name of the Father is the true story of the Guilford Four, three Irish men and one British 17 year old girl falsely accused of bombing the Guilford pub killing 5 and wounding over 75. They were convicted to serve life in prison each. This movie is the story of their conviction and later release when a courageous lawyer (Emma Thompson, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the role) decided to listen to the father of Gerry Conlon, who were both in prison together. This is a wonderful movie, full of sadness and hope. It is the second of three movies that Daniel-Day Lewis and Jim Sheridan did together. The others being My Left Foot, which got Lewis' first Oscar win. This movie was nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Director, Picture, Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Screenplay. Well since 1993 was the hardest year for the Oscars (especially for BSA) I can understand it not winning any due to Schindler's List taking most of them. What is so wonderful about this movie is the reality that this actually happened. It feels like you are watching them being tortured in front of your very eyes. The brutality and horror that these people went through is very touching and surreal. I give it 4.5/5 stars.
