Of Gods and Men is a French film about a group of monks in Algeria choosing whether they should stay or leave their monastery, which has helped bring up the surrounding community, or leave the country due to acts of religious violence and terrorism. It portrays the monks as real humans able to make tough choices very well. Most people think of monks as being very odd and out of touch with society. They are usually looked as people who don't go through a normal person's daily routine. The movie shows them choosing this life-changing decision while consulting the government, townspeople, each other, and God. They ultimately choose to stay. The most amazing thing about this movie is that it is based on a true story. The acting, cinematography, and directing is superb. I usually don't go see a whole lot of foreign movies, but this looked very appealing. At one of the most touching scenes of the movie, all of the monks sit and listen to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. It is one of the greatest scenes I have ever seen. This movie is filled with long scenes with little dialogue, but is carried out with a calming serenity. I give it 3.5/5 stars.
