I have seen many sports-movies. From Best picture winning Rocky and Chariots of Fire to Remember the Titans and Glory Road. These movies are amazing but do not rank as one of my favorites.
1. The Natural: This movie is the story of Roy Hobbs, a man destined for greatness. Throughout his life, we see him meet that destiny of being one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Never heard of Roy Hobbs?? Well thats because he never existed, this movie is full of miracles and very odd occurrences. The movie starts with him as a young man going to the majors, but is met with a big speed bump that I will not divulge to those who haven't yet seen the movie (THAT MEANS YOU BAILEY LANGFORD). Hegoes through many hardships, but is given a second change to the majors only to be a middle-aged man. He is scoffed for being old, but becomes the strongest man on the team. This movie is full of inspiration and hope, fear and destiny, and is a must-see for all sports-movie fans and sports and movie fans in general. It is packed with stars such as Robert Duvall and Kim Basinger, and also has one of the greatest movie themes of all time. It is my favorite sports-movie because it shows redemption and the will to fight and meet your destiny. I give it 5/5 stars and call it the "Shawshank Redemption" of sports-movies.
2. Hoosiers- Hoosiers is another tale of courage and integrity, but through the sport of basketball. It tells the story of a small town Indiana high school team and their 1951-1952 season. It is composed of great performances by Gene Hackman ( 2-time Oscar winner = BA-The French Connection-1971 + BSA-Unforgiven-1992) and Dennis Hopper, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Hoosiers. Hackman plays the controversial coach Norman Dale and strives to win the championship at almost any cost. Hopper plays the town drunk who gets one last chance of redemption by helping to coach the team. It is full of excitement, wonder, and sadness. It also has a great movie score. If you haven't seen this movie, then you are missing out on one of the most inspirational movies of all time. 5/5 stars
