I read the book before this movie, and I feel like I should warn you that the book is much much better than the movie. Even though it was a good all-around movie, it lacked the essence of adventure the book provided. Christoph Waltz plays August, the ring master of 'The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.' And Waltz does a great job playing the deranged, bi-polar husband of Marlena (Reese Witherspoon). The story centers around Jacob Jankowski, a college dropout who joins the ring after he learns that his parents just died in a car accident. He becomes head vet for the circus, but soon falls in love with Marlena and trouble ensues. The title is a clever one which is a reference to the beginning of the book, which is not shown in the movie. The director was an odd choice for this romantic fairy tale in this circus setting because of his past work which included Constantine and I Am Legend. A few areas of plot and even some characters were left out from the book, but the story was still kept together. I give it a 2.5/5.
